What Is Two Factor Authentication Feature?

WhatsApp is one of the most prominent messaging software used worldwide, with billions of users. The simplicity of conversation and the user interface keeps attracting more smartphone owners towards the messaging app. All you need is an active SIM card to make your account on WhatsApp, and you don’t even need to remember any password.

However, in 2016, WhatsApp introduced the two-factor authentication process to ensure the individual privacy and security of the users. With this feature, the users can put a 6-digit PIN to protect their WhatsApp accounts from unauthorized access. With a PIN, no one can use your phone number to access your WhatsApp account. This feature has been specially designed to save your account in case of any device theft or SIM hacking.

Now that we know how useful and crucial two-factor authentication is, what can happen if you forget this PIN? If you want to recover your WhatsApp account without a PIN, you may have to reset the account and lose all your data. You don’t only need this PIN while switching to a new device, but WhatsApp keeps asking it frequently so that you remember it. Nonetheless, if you have forgotten your WhatsApp PIN, here are two ways to recover it:

  • Recovering forgotten PIN with email
  • Recovering forgotten PIN without email

But first, make sure to check the following requirements before you get started with the recovery process:

  • Update to the latest version of WhatsApp available on the Play Store or the App Store.
  • Check if the two-step verification feature is turned on in your device.
  • Note the appropriate email address added to reset the PIN.

Recovering Forgotten WhatsApp PIN from Email

If you still have access to the email address you entered while setting up the two-step verification PIN, then you can easily recover the forgotten WhatsApp PIN without any hassles. To do so, here are the vital steps to follow:

Step 1: Start your device and open the WhatsApp account that you had registered with your phone number and have forgotten the PIN for.

If you are trying to set up WhatsApp on a new device, then agree and continue. Enter your phone number and wait for the verification code via SMS (or call). Enter the code on WhatsApp. Now you will be prompted to enter the PIN for your WhatsApp account.

Step 2: Enter the “PIN” that you remember to open and access WhatsApp.

Step 3: In case your PIN is incorrect, and you cannot think of alternatives, tap on the ‘Forgot PIN’ option.

Step 4: Once you select that, a pop-up message will come up on the screen. Read all the information mentioned and tap on “Send Email.” Thus, an email will be sent to the mail account connected with your WhatsApp account.

Step 5: Check your mail account and look for any mail from WhatsApp.

Step 6: The mail will have a link to reset the two-step verification by WhatsApp.

Step 7: Click on the link given, and it will redirect to the web browser.

Step 8: The link will automatically redirect you again to your WhatsApp account from where you can confirm this step.

Step 9: Tap on “Confirm” to disable the two-step verification process on your WhatsApp account.

Step 10: Now turn off all the processes and start all over again. Turn on your device and open WhatsApp. This time, you will not be required to enter any PIN. You can easily access your chats and groups.

Note: You may want to set up the two-step verification again as it makes your account secure. If you are using the same email address on your phone as a primary that you used while setting up the two-step verification, then you do not have to verify anything in the mail. Immediately after selecting ‘Forgot PIN,’ you will get the option to disable the two-factor verification. Once you can access your account, you can set up the two-step verification again if you want.

Recovering Forgotten WhatsApp PIN Without Email

While setting up the two-factor authentication, if you skipped adding your email address, then it can get tricky recovering the forgotten PIN. You should leave your account for seven days, as there is not much that you can do at this point. Follow these steps and see if they work for you:

Step 1: After waiting for seven days, try again to set up a new PIN for your WhatsApp account.

Step 2: If you are successful in restarting the process, enter your new 6-digit PIN and get the account started.

Step 3: Remember to verify your account within a month; otherwise, your account will be at risk of automatic deletion.

This process works in most cases where people have either not entered an email address or they have lost access to their email address somehow. Waiting for seven days should bring you a chance to recover the account, but if you fail to do it, you may lose your account, too, with all your data. However, you can always make a new WhatsApp account with the same number.
