How to Convert WordPad to Word

December 24, 2020 by Nitin Maheta Leave a Comment

WordPad is a simple text editor that allows users to read the text in very basic formats and make necessary edits. On the other hand, Microsoft Word has many text editing and publishing features. Microsoft Word and WordPad are compatible as you can easily copy and paste texts between these two applications.

When we have to choose a full-featured word processor, Microsoft Word is the right choice. Word is a better word processing program and is mostly useful for large writing projects. You can include documents with footnotes, bibliographies, graphics, or automation in Word, which is impossible in WordPad.

Steps to convert WordPad document to Word

To convert a WordPad file to Word doesn’t require a particular version. The file can convert regardless of any version of Microsoft Word.

  1. Open Microsoft Word and click on the file option, then open and browse the WordPad file you want to convert. Tap on the drop-down menu on the lower right side of the file and select “ Rich Format Text.” All the WordPad files appear in the list. Select the file you want to convert.
  2. Alternatively, right-click on the WordPad file, select Open with and directly open it on the Word file.
  3. Click on the File tab located next to the home, and a dropdown menu will appear.
  4. Go to “Save As,” and your saving options will appear like Rich Text Format, Text Document, and others.
  5. Select the Office Open XML document (*.docx) option, and it will allow you to save a copy of a text document in Microsoft Word Docx format.
  6. A pop-up window will appear, and you have to click on the Save button.
  7. Now select the location for the file and click on Save.

Keep a few things in mind:

Check if the Office Open XML document (*.docx) is selected in the “Save as Type” field.

Saving a Docx copy does not affect your WordPad file, and the .docx version that you saved will be a separate copy.

In case all your documents are opening in WordPad, you can go through the following steps to change the settings:

  1. Now click on the Start menu and select the control panel.
  2. Select the default program
  3. Click on “Associate a file type or protocol with a program.”
  4. Scroll down and select (*Docx)
  5. Select the top right corner option, “Change Program.”
  6. Select the word application available on your computer or laptop
  7. Click OK
