How to Remove Password Protection from PDF

May 30, 2022 by Nitin Maheta Leave a Comment

PDF, which stands for Portable Document Format, has become a daily part of our life. May it be a book that you are studying or an official document having some sensitive information, everything is done through PDFs. PDFs were created to make sure that the data in the document cannot be changed. To enhance the security even further, nowadays, PDFs come with passwords that need to be entered every time you access the document.

Entering a password every time for a document that is very sensitive does not seem like very bad. However, if it is not very sensitive, like your college ID, then it will be a hassle. This is why removing passwords from pdf becomes necessary for some people. If you are looking for ways through which you can remove passwords from your pdfs, then you are at the right place. Here’s how you can remove password protection from PDF.

Remove PDF passwords using Google Chrome

The method is not specific to Google Chrome, and you can use just about any other browser to perform the job for you. However, you do need the password of the file for this work. Here’s how you do it:

  • Open the PDF file through Google Chrome. You can use Gmail, Drive, etc., to perform the same.
  • Enter the password after you are prompted for it. If you don’t have the password for the file, you may want to look for other methods.
  • Once you enter the correct password, the file will be opened. Press on the ‘Print’ option, which will be in the top right corner of your screen. You can also press ‘CTRL+P’ on Windows and ‘Command+p’ on Mac to perform the same operation.
  • You then need to save the file as a PDF to your wanted location. This new PDF can now be accessed without any password.

Removing PDF passwords using a Mac

Mac is one of the most used operating systems right now. All the laptops from Apple run on this operating system. If you have a Mac or a Mac laptop, then you can use the following method to remove a password from a PDF:

  • Download the file from a browser, or you can use iTunes to directly share the file from your iPhone to your Mac.
  • After downloading the file browse to it using Finder.
  • After finding the file, preview it, and enter the password. Again, you will need a password to perform this method.
  • After the file has opened, click on the file option.
  • You will see an option called ‘Export as PDF.’ Once you click on it and save it to your wanted location, you will have a PDF file without any passwords.

Removing PDF passwords using Android or iOS

The smartphone industry is made up of these 2 operating systems. We will be using a similar method of “removing” the password as above. There are multiple apps that you can download that let you save documents as PDFs. You can find these apps on Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS. You can use any of the apps that you want; they will follow the same procedure. Here’s our recommendation.

For Android:

You can download the PDF utilities app from the Play Store. After installing the app, download the PDF file and open it through PDF utilities. Enter the password, and open the file. After you’ve entered the password, don’t change the file location. You will then be able to access this PDF without entering the password from the next time onward.

For iOS

We recommend the PDF expert app, which is available on the App Store. Performing the task that we are about to show you requires a subscription to the app. Again, you can use other applications which provide similar functioning. You can also use its free trial, which will allow you to download all the PDF files and then view them without a password.

Removing PDF passwords using Adobe Acrobat

There are a lot of PDF editors out there, and one of the oldest solutions is Adobe Acrobat. It is one of the best-known names in the market and contains almost all the features that one can expect from a PDF editor. Although many companies have put out better solutions, it remains one of the most used PDF editors, and if you are one of them, you can use the following method to remove PDF passwords.

Adobe Acrobat allows you to go to the core security settings and remove the password from there. Here’s how you do it:

  • You first need to subscribe to Adobe Acrobat Pro Dc. After doing that, open the PDF file using Adobe Acrobat and enter the password for authentication.
  • After that, click on the lock screen option and then security settings.
  • Find the setting called ‘permission details’ and navigate to it.
  • You then need to select the security option. After which, you can change the security method to no security and apply the changes.
  • After applying the changes, you can open the file without having to put any passwords.

Removing PDF password using the online tool Smallpdf

Smallpdf allows you to edit PDFs in any fashion you want. For this article, we will be focusing on its feature of removing PDF passwords instantly. You can follow the following steps to perform the function:

  • Navigate to the Unlock PDF tool on the Smallpdf website.
  • You can then drag and drop the PDF file onto the highlighted area.
  • If you are unable to do so, there is a browse option that will let you select the file on your operating system by navigating through it.
  • After you have selected the file and uploaded it, check on the box which basically asks you if you own the file or not. If you do, click on it and proceed.
  • Click on “Unlock PDF,” and you can download the file within seconds.

This method works with every platform, whether you are logging in from a PC or a smartphone. It is one of the most flexible methods as of now.
