How much data does Netflix use?

If you choose standard definition video, Netflix uses around 1GB an hour, and for High Definition(HD) videos, Netflix uses about 3GB per hour. If you think that downloading the video will help limit data usage, then you’re wrong. The streaming and downloading utilize similar amounts of data on Netflix.

Steps to control Netflix data usage

Netflix has four settings for the quality of video per device:

  • Low Quality- 0.3 GB for an hour
  • Medium Quality: 0.7 GB for an hour
  • High: 3GB for an hour
  • Ultra HD: 7GB for an hour
  • Auto: It sets the video quality according to your internet connectivity to deliver the highest video quality possible.

By choosing the quality of the data according to your requirement, you can easily limit the data consumption.

Change your Netflix Data settings

Netflix gives you the freedom to change the setting only for a single profile, so if you want to set data limits on other profiles, you have to do it separately. Use the below-mentioned steps to change the data settings of your Netflix app on your Android.

  1. Open the App and choose your account (your profile)
  2. Go to Playback Settings and Select Change
  3. Select the data usage that suits you( restricting data can affect the streaming video quality)
  4. Save the changes, and it will work within 8 hours.

You can also limit your Android mobile data usage by selecting one of these options:

  • Wi-Fi only: Your Android device will stream Netflix videos only when it is connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Save Data: You can stream for 6 hours per GB of data.
  • Maximum Data: If an unlimited data plan is accessible to you, go for this option. It will allow streaming at the highest possible quality whenever you watch a show or movie on Netflix. It can take up to 1GB for 20 minutes and more, depending on your network connection.
  • Automatic: Netflix automatically selects the best video quality matching your current data limit. Watch videos for 4 hours per GB of data.

Make changes in the mobile data usage settings to choose the best plan for your Android mobile data plan.

  • Open the Netflix app on your Android.
  • Select More or Profile option
  • Tap on App settings
  • Go to Video Playback and select Cellular Data Usage.
  • Select your preferred setting for the mobile data
