The standard way to reboot your Android smartphone or tablet is as follows. Press and hold the power key of your device. There will be an alert on your screen with 3-4 options. From those options, tap on reboot. Your device will automatically reboot. This method will not work if your screen is frozen.
How to Reboot a smartphone with a frozen screen
Restarting the smartphone always unfreezes it. It is a proven method to revert the phone into a working condition. If you find your Android phone in an unresponsive state when none of the touch controls and buttons are working, you need to perform a force restart. This will make it work again.
To perform a forced restart:
- Hold power and volume up buttons simultaneously and press them till you see your screen goes black.
- If this combination does not work, you can try these:
- Volume-down + Power button
- Volume-up + Volume-down + Power button
- Once your screen is pitch dark, press and hold the power button to boot it back.
In case you own an Android device with a removable battery, you do not need these combinations. Simply remove the battery and replace it back. This will turn off the phone automatically. Now press and hold the power key to turn on your phone.
Try Hard Reboot on the device
If the above method doesn’t produce results, you can try this one. This will hard reboot your smartphone or tablet. Try it only if the screen does not respond and is frozen. Perform the following steps to do a hard reset:
- Ensure that you have turned on the screen
- After that, start by pressing the power button and then the volume buttons simultaneously. Keep doing this till you can view your Android smartphone’s boot animation.
Perform a factory data reset
You can use this method if your device does not boot after turning it off due to a frozen screen. You have to factory data reset on your device via recovery mode. Note that this process will erase all your phone data. So, backup your phone data before doing a factory reset. After taking the back up, follow the given steps:
- Switch off the phone so that you can access recovery mode.
- When you press and hold the volume down + power button, you will enter the recovery mode. In the recovery mode, you will have to use the volume up + down button to navigate through the menu. Find the “Factory reset” option using the volume keys. Press the power button to select it. Then select the “yes” option when you get the prompt for the same.
Once the system has wiped all the data, you can now safely reboot your device using the volume keys and power button. It will be a new device now, and you can set it up accordingly.
